Painting Over Powder Coat

Simple Guide: Painting Over Powder Coat with 1K Automotive Paint

Painting over powder coating is easy with 1K automotive paint, which adheres well to powder-coated surfaces without requiring primer or sanding.

Steps to Paint Over Powder Coat

  1. Clean the Surface

    • Wipe the surface thoroughly with a clean cloth and a degreaser (e.g., acetone) to remove dirt, grease, and any contaminants.

    • Ensure the surface is completely dry before painting.

  2. Paint the Surface

    • Use a high-quality 1K automotive paint.

    • Apply 2–3 thin, even coats using a spray can or brush, allowing each coat to dry according to the paint manufacturer’s instructions.

  3. Curing

    • Let the paint cure fully, typically 24–48 hours, before handling or installing.

Optional Steps for an Enhanced Finish

  • Light Sanding: Lightly sand the surface with 320–400 grit sandpaper to create a slightly rough texture for improved adhesion, especially if the powder coat is very glossy.

  • Primer: For the smoothest and most durable finish, you can apply a thin layer of primer before painting, although this is not required for most 1K paints.

Why Choose 1K Automotive Paint?

  • No Primer Needed: Saves time and effort.

  • Easy Application: Adheres well directly to powder coating.

  • Durable Finish: Suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
