# Choosing the Correct Size Table Legs

## Table Leg Heights

We sell the majority of our legs at pre-defined project heights. i.e. Table height is 71cm and Bench is 40cm. You can read more about specific heights here:

## Table Leg Widths

For formats: [end-legs](https://hairpin.com/collections/ends) and [frame-legs](https://hairpin.com/collections/table-frames), width of the leg should be considered:

### Table Leg Widths for Stability

Excessive top overhang across the table’s width can make the table prone to tipping if someone leans or sits on the edge.

A good general rule of thumb is for the table top to not exceed double the footprint.

* 58cm wide table leg can support up to a 116cm wide top.
* 74cm can support up to 148cm.
* 78cm can supporet up to 156cm.

### Table Leg Widths for Seating Layout

If you plan to use chairs or benches around the table, the width and position of the legs can effect usability.

Narrower legs inset by 30 cm enable comfortable seating at the table ends, though this slightly reduces chair and leg room for side positions.</p></figcaption></figure>

## Table Length

The legs themselves do not effect how long a table can be. So long as the [table is stiff](https://support.thehairpinlegcompany.co.uk/table-legs/choosing-the-perfect-legs/choosing-legs-for-a-strong-and-stable-build/how-to-improve-stiffness-of-a-table-top) and within suggested [weight guidance](https://support.thehairpinlegcompany.co.uk/table-legs/choosing-the-perfect-legs/choosing-legs-for-a-strong-and-stable-build/leg-weight-loading-guidelines) you can build the table as long as you like!

{% hint style="info" %}
Longer tables are more prone to flexing, which can lead to a wobbly feel if not properly braced. This issue affects the tabletop itself rather than the legs.
